Barry - an Alternative Touch Bar

Barry - an Alternative Touch Bar

Barry – an alternative touch bar for creative minds

Last year, Apple introduced a “new thing” called Touch bar. It is essentially a bar positioned at the very top of your laptop’s keyboard that allows people to do certain actions in a faster way. It obviously raised a lot of doubts and skepticism, making people argue about its real functionality. As the web showed, a lot of blogs and YouTube channels reviewed the new laptop, describing its Pros and Cons. It is probably from that new tool that Alex took his inspiration to build a portable touch bar.

Meet Barry

It all started with an idea, designing a new device to help speeding up any creative workflow, with no limits. It had to be simple outside and powerful inside and most of all I wanted it to be:
– Totally Customizable
– Mac and Windows friendly
– Community driven

Alex Pluda, an Italian Designer that lives in UK created an awesome portable touch bar concept. The device looks slick and well curated under many aspects, such as the design, materials and colors. In fact, the designer chose to use Onyx and Alabaster as the main external hardware materials, with elegant black and white tones.

As he previously mentioned, the device is going to be Mac and Windows friendly, and I can totally see a correlation with the design, which blends perfectly with both the two manufacturers. On the other side, the Designer values new technology and knows that a great battery and a fast charging USB Type-C connector are crucial in order to achieve a reliable product.

The Software

Alex worked also on the software, which is going to be a key component for this portable device. As he showed in his presentation, the bar is able to hold up to 20 icon tools. That’s a lot of shortcuts!

The designer built the product with productivity in mind, and for that reason the bar is fully customizable, with the possibility to add up to 20 quick tools, or 5 to 10 that share more functionalities, like opacity and color hue. On the other side, it works like a normal Macbook’s touch bar, where you can control your favorite Spotify music.

Conclusion

Alex showed all of his skills with this product concept design. One of the most surprising facts is that this is his first attempt to build a real product, which is even more spectacular. This device is a great concept that could be picked up by many manufacturers and entrepreneurs in order to be created and sold as an additional device. It is a valuable alternative for those who don’t own a Macbook Pro and would like to increase their productivity.
